Initial Heritage Afrika

Initial Heritage Afrika Series

Afrika’s endowment is magic given multidimensionality. In this land, the people look upon a gourd and see infinite uses. They create strings of beads, forged of fire and made in the image of materials unparalleled: glass, bone, gemstones, and cowrie shells. They plunge their hands into the land and pluck gold from its bosom/deepest caverns. And this seems apt, as Afrika is widely thought to be/purported to be the birthplace of all man, wise in our knowing and doing. And in the manner after this, we have jewellery that speaks to the exact way in which human ingenuity is embodied in African culture; we have three series that play witness to how Africans brush against the bounds of doing. Here, we speak to the wealth of that history.
In Dzonu, you will find Emefa’s own birth right; strings of beads made after the transcendental power of her people, the Ga, Ewe, and Ga-Dangbe. What’s more, we have their ability to cross generations and display their lives as incensed objects of flame. These beads are living itself, and account for the markers/milestones that adorn the twine/cord of life.
Sika is lifeblood in the form of gold. It is human because it gilds the lives of West Africans and it is humane because it originates from a single mine. It is a tribute to its meaning – money, to its history – one of coinage in West Africa, and to one of the richest men to live since we dispersed from the lands of his birth – Mansa Musa.
And as for Calabash, there is only unbridled utility to Africans. Aged, this cherished gourd is at once a bowl for viands and a vessel for the world. It is the kiln of music; unending mainstay of African society, modelled after gods, and muse to deities.
We turn our backs to the present to honour our (collective) past. We use our birthright as a skeleton to build the body of our identity. We create this collection so that posterity of this fearsome continent will know themselves.
